The July 11 release of the third generation iPhone has rocketed Internet radio phenom Pandora to the third most popular application on the new device. Pandora.com has long been a niche site for music lovers, allows them to create custom streams based on their favorite songs or artists. The application’s popularity has ballooned seemingly overnight, having played over 3 million songs and registered over 180,000 new users since the 3G’s debut. Pandora has always been weary of advertising campaigns, but has already announced a new mobile marketing platform for later this year.

Internet radio has long been regarded as a medium with loads of unrealized potential—the value in traditional radio was not only within its content but its portability. Now that Internet radio has a means for escape from our desktops and onto the streets, what’s stopping that potential from turning into actual revenue?
