Updated: Playboy Past, Present and Uncensored Coming to iPad

By Steve Smith

Playboy magazine is finally arriving on the iPad. The news comes from the man himself. Hugh Hefner Tweeted a note last evening making the announcement. “Big news! Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March,” he said. In subsequent responses to question, Hef also stated that the full archives of Playboy magazine will be available on the tablet format and the content will be uncensored.

No further details were available immediately from Playboy Enterprises. Playboy has flirted with the Apple iOS operating system in the past. An iPhone app last year served as a kind of promotional platform for each new issue of the magazine. Nudity was excluded, and the samples from each issue were rather scant. An iPad version of the magazine appeared briefly and unannounced in the iPad App Stores in August. Minonline happened upon the app before it was pulled from the App Store. The restrictions on nudity in the App Store limited the app’s appeal, and the technical execution was underwhelming.

The prospect of an uncensored Playboy in the App Store suggests that Apple is relaxing its notoriously tight policies on nudity in apps. Minonline has requests in to Playboy for further details and will provide updates as they become available.

UPDATE: It turns out that nudity will not be coming to the  App Store after all. A Playboy spokesperson tells minonline Playboy current and past full issues will be available not in an app but through an iPad-enabled Web-based service from Playboy’s digital publishing partner Bondi. Apparently, this will be a subscription service that users will access through the iPad Web browser, although the destination is likely to include iPad interface elements and familiat tablet functionality. Playboy also says that it does plan a branded iPad app that will not include nudity. So the full story is that Apple does not seem to have loosened its infamous content restrictions…even for Hef.
