I WANT MEDIA TOP STORY 1
Per "Esquire," Rupert Murdoch Is 21st-Century Influential.Friday, September 5, 2008 We would not have bet on it because even if the billionaire News Corp. chairman lives to be 100, it would only encompass 31 years of the 21st century. But Esquire editor-in-chief (since June 1997) David Granger, who "looks ahead" with October's 75th-anniversary issue after "looking back" in celebrating the monthly's 70th in October 2003, tells min that Murdoch is among the 75 that he and his staff believe "are foundational to the creation of the new century. The 21st century will be built on their efforts and influence." Murdoch's media-building skills (Fox TV/MySpace, etc.) can be paralleled with Thomas Edison's inventive skills, which, while mostly 19th century, had a profound effect on the 20th. (Edison died in 1931, the year Murdoch was born.)Others on the Esquire list include Elon Musk, whom Granger says is "leading in three different industries--electric-powered automobiles, solar energy, and space exploration--that will be central to the 21st century." And 35-year-old Scottish writer Rory Stewart (The Prince of the Marshes: And Other Occupational Hazards of a Year in Iraq) a Granger-described "future prime minister of Great Britain. You're blown away by all he's accomplished." Cover release: on NBC's Today this morning (September 8), with--barring a news story of Hurricane Gustav proportions--Granger being interviewed. First issues will then go on display at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern) at the Border's in New York's Time Warner Center, with Ford being a partner. Anniversary party is Wednesday (September 10) at New York's Gotham Hall, with about 500 expected--including the 19 editors of Esquire's international editions (the first time they will have all been together). ..."Esquire's" October Anniversary Issue Is Advertising Influential, Too...VP/publisher (since March 2003) Kevin O'Malley tells min that the issue's 161 ad pages set a record for the month in being 10 greater than October 2007 and 25 greater than October 2003, when the 70th anniversary was celebrated with a then-and-now portrait of Muhammad Ali. "Given the weak advertising environment, we're very pleased," says O'Malley, "but this won't turn around this year." (Esquire's January-through-September differential is -14.28%.) "Still, what is neat is that many of our October advertisers are, like the editorial, future-centric." Included is Ford, which, per POSTADVERTISING.COM's Jeremy Greenfield (ex-min's b2b editor), will have an "animated" ad on cover #2 in being "the first mass-produced print product using electronic paper display technology." This has the potential of making the Esquire anniversary ads as intriguing as those televised during the Super Bowl....And Murdoch Is "Businessweek" Cited For His "Extreme Experience."At 77, he is relatively a "kid" next to 85-year-old Viacom/CBS ceo Sumner Redstone, 82-year-old Playboy Enterprises founder (1953)/editor-in-chief Hugh Hefner, and 80-year-old Condé Nast chairman (since 1959) S.I. Newhouse, Jr. They are among the 25 "seniors" that BW (September 8) describes as "cutting deals, starting news businesses, and generally kicking boomer and Gen Y butt."Take min's fun quiz and find out how magazine-savvy you are!
