After Bonnier recruited Sara Öhrvall in 2008 to reboot its digital operations, she built a central R&D department in order to help the company better understand user behavior. The department has had a ripple effect of success for the company, producing such initiatives as the U.S. launch of the Mag+ platform for the iPad (Popular Science was first to use the format). In November 2010 Bonnier introduced its News+ product, which rethinks the newspaper model for the iPad.
Also in 2010, Öhrvall consulted on the creation of the Bonnier digital business unit to provide a unified approach to all things digital. Starting in 2011, R&D will merge with the digital business unit under Öhrvall’s leadership. ●
