While most magazine brands felt the economy’s brutal broadside this year, People magazine and People.com enjoyed the enviable distinction of practically being recession-resistant. The latter’s success has been attributable to several thriving social media ventures. Among them: People’s “Celebrity News Tracker,” which, for a nominal sum, enables readers to follow People stories on the iPhone; Peoplepets.com, which also has a Twitter feed; and a partnership with game vendor Big Fish that features game downloads at the People.com/games section of the site. At the helm of these innovations is Mark Golin, who has been editor of People.com since 2006. The games venture is characteristic of Golin’s open-minded attitude. “People.com continually looks for new and innovative ways to enhance our users’ online experience beyond the celebrity genre,” he told min a few months ago. And with 1.4 followers on People.com’s regular Twitter account (and 700,000 for Peoplepets.com), Golin must have a strong sense that this content expansion is working.
