Being a risk-taker has paid off handsome dividends for Walter. Having helped build Agricultural Online, the digital extension for Successful Farming (and Meredith’s first-ever Web site) 14 years ago, Walter applied his masterly skills as a cutting-edge innovator and pioneer in the digital space to his most recent social media initiative: the launch and development of Farmers for the Future, a social network for young and beginning farmers. The venture has been so successful that Walter is frequently called upon in the agricultural community to speak on social media or provide guidance on how to develop social media programs. Walter is unusally modest, and credits his success to finding and collaborating with talented individuals. But he also cites another more elusive factor: “The muses have been willing to whisper a word or two to me over the years,” he quips.
