When National Geographic’s senior vice president and group publisher Steve Giannetti left the company in October, Claudia Malley stepped into the breach to assume his responsibilities, which include NG Adventure/Kids/Traveler. For anyone else, assuming the mantle from a veteran like Giannetti may seem like a tall order, but given her business acumen and superb leadership skills, Claudia Malley is more than up to the job. She displayed these skills recently with the award-winning Dow Chemical initiative, which encompassed a custom wall-size map depicting sources of safe drinking water around the world; it also projected what the water supply will look like in 50 years. The map ran as an insert to the magazine, was posted online and promoted on the National Geographic Channel. It is one of the many ways that show how shrewdly and skillfully Malley is expanding the NG brand.
