2009 21 Most Intriguing People in Media: Barbara Fairchild, Editor-in-Chief, Bon Appétit

Barbara Fairchild has logged more than 30 years at Bon Appétit, and this year may have been her most difficult. In addition to grappling with an industry-wide affliction—the economy’s toxic effect on ad revenue in print media—Fairchild felt the blow personally and professionally when Bon Appétit parent publisher Condé Nast shuttered Gourmet magazine, its only other food title, after a 68-year run. With Bon Appétit now absorbing Gourmet’s subscriber base, Fairchild is now, in a sense, carrying the mantle of Gourmet’s last editor Ruth Reichl. It’s a heavy burden, but with recent initiatives such as Bon Appétit’s Supper Club and Cafe—the brand hosted celebrity chefs for a week in September at its new venue in Manhattan—it’s one that Fairchild, who started off at the magazine as an editorial assistant, is more than equipped to handle.
