Over the past year, Angela Burt-Murray has positioned Essence within the context of an historic presidency, establishing a unique editorial perspective from the African-American community. The January 2009 issue commemorating the inauguration of President Barack Obama was a record-breaker, selling more than 452,000 copies. And for the May issue, Burt-Murray conducted the first-ever sit-down interview with First Lady Michelle Obama and her mother, Mrs. Marian Robinson, for a special Mother’s Day cover story. Further leveraging the importance of Obama’s historic presidency to her audience of African-American women, Burt-Murray appointed a Washington, D.C., correspondent for Essence, another benchmark in the history of the publication.
