Steve Smith's Eye on Digital Media--October Boxscores: House and Garden.com, too, Will Be Missed.

October was predictably strong for most of the service magazine sites as Halloween ideas and a seasonal refocus on the home scared up substantial spikes at Meredith's BHG.COM (+77.35% page views, +28.41% unique visitors versus September), and Hearst's COUNTRYLIVING.COM (+87.55% PVs, +17.79% UVs). The recently canceled HOUSEANDGARDEN.COM produced similar results (+99.55% PVs, +41.04% UVs), but with much emotion. Ordinarily, magazines just disappear from newsstands before an editor gets to say goodbye, let alone let readers respond. The digital age has even reformatted the way a book closes. House and Garden editor-in-chief (since October 1996) Dominique Browning announced the decision in a heartfelt online editorial that linked to forums where scores of readers wrote lengthy farewells in return.

Also notable in October: (1) PARADE.COM (+88.16% PVs, +67.25% UVs), in part from the MSN portal's heartier distribution deals and its picking up celebrity and health stories; (2) WIRED.COM (+39.44% PVs, +32.19% UVs), with--shades of Playboy --its slideshow of Tokyo's Adult Expo being the most popular feature; (3) INSTYLE.COM (+16.20% PVs, +39.67% UVs), where the popular Look of the Day clusters together multiple celebrity looks for the editors and readers to choose a favorite; and (4) travel site CONCIERGE.COM (+87.55% PVs, +17.79% PVs), which got scary traffic by spooking up the editorial in World’s Creepiest Places that ran on partner Yahoo!'s home page and generated 8.5 million PVs.
Below are the top sites sorted by percent gain of Pageviews and unique visitors.
