THE MONEY SHOT
Future US Launches Premium PC Gamer Digital App-isodes Into Games NetworkThursday, September 29, 2011 It is not really a video magazine and it isn’t quite a game or just another web site. The digital version of PC Gamer magazine being launched this week into the game distribution network Steam is a wholly different animal. Steam is the popular games hub and storefront from Valve, makers of the legendary Half-Life. Ordinarily members download and pay for PC game titles. But PC Gamer Digital is a downloadable weekly $1.99 “episode” within an app that includes a range of assets, from game walkthroughs and interactive tutorials to tools to help improve play. This is all about interactivity, much like a game, and not designed for leaning back to just watch or read. “If you take your hand off of the mouse, we have done it wrong,” Kristen Salvatore, producer and head of Future Studios, told her crew of developers as they were working on the project. “We want users to get inside the content.” This is a good example of designing your brand for the specific context and mode of delivery, she says. “Putting a PDF into Steam would not be valuable and it isn’t what gamers are used to.” Future Studio was established at Future US to develop these out-of-the-media box projects and to explore new business models. But at $1.99 a weekly episode, that adds up to an $8 a month load for the gamer. “They are getting 30-35 minutes of content,” however, says Salvatore. And PC Gamer Digital includes new technologies like a “Game View” environment where gamers will be able to feel as if they are walking inside a map of a game. “I think good content is what people will pay for,” she says. Advertising and marketing partnerships will also be part of the model. The applications is downloadable for free with an in-app charge for each new episode. But with an episodic structure, Salvatore thinks her team will also learn and adjust to what their audience responds to. “For us it is a new and exciting world, since we are coming from a traditional media space and now can really iterate on the fly to better meet the user’s needs.” Take min's fun quiz and find out how magazine-savvy you are! That they chose STEAM is also really cool. STEAM's awesome :D And they accept paysafecard which means no borrowing my bro's CC, either, which is always a good thing, haha.
