United Airlines converted their inflight publication into a tablet and smartphone product. The tablet version is a full adaptation of the magazine, while the smartphone version is tailored specifically for the Three Perfect Days article, the cover story for each issue.
The tablet app is designed to engage United’s 148 mm annual passengers and Hemispheres readers during the time they’re not on the aircraft and unable to read the magazine. The app contains sliding and popup galleries, links to relevant websites, embedded video and audio. The app archives date back to 2011, allowing users to engage with past editions.
The app stands at over 69 thousand lifetime downloads and an average of 755 daily users. The annual app budget is $70,000 and production has now been brought in-house in order to retain the tone and design style that Ink brought to the print product.
