Susan Spencer Succeeds Elizabeth Mayhew as Woman's Day Editor-in-ChiefMonday, January 23, 2012 This morning (January 23), Hearst Magazines president (since June 2010) David Carey announced the hire of All You executive editor (since Sept. 2007) Susan Spencer as Woman's Day editor-in-chief. Predecessor (since Jan. 2010) Elizabeth Mayhew, in the words of the corporate statement, "has decided to leave the company."At the Time Inc.-owned All You, Spencer was second-in-command to to managing editor (since April 2007) Clare McHugh, and the 7½-year-old magazine's circulation has grown steadily--including a 20.9% jump in first-half 2011 to 1.33 million (All You's 2012 rate base is 1.5 million). By contrast, the 74½-year-old Woman's Day's 2012 rate base was lowered from 3.8 million to 3.25 million and its frequency dropped from 15 times per year to monthly. In WD's first full year of Hearst ownership (after being a part of Lagardère SCA's Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. for 23 years), Mayhew had put Hot in Cleveland star Valerie Bertinelli on the January 2012 cover to set a 29-year precedent (Morgan Fairchild was the last to appear in June 1983) in advance of WD's 75th-anniversary celebration in October. The editor-in-chief change is Carey's second at Hearst Magazines, following his replacing Stephen Drucker with Jay Fielden at Town & Country in Jan. 2011. Spencer becomes the third WD editor-in-chief in the past 30 years, following now-Hearst Magazines editorial director Ellen Levine (1982-1990), Jane Chesnutt (1990-2009) and Mayhew.
