Christina Condos has been in the b2b media business since 1986, always on the events side, and has been instrumental in shifting her group's focus and that of their events to change with the times. Where Condos used to see b2b events as being about branding, today she sees the value in face-to-face networking and education. "I think it's much more about integrated media. A successful company will sell that way and take a consultative approach," she says. These days, she maintains that planners need to do a lot more preparation to see people they need to see.

Since events are becoming more important and costly than ever, Condos advises streamlining and providing more bang for your buck. She recently helped 33-year-old government- oriented computer trade show, Federal Office Systems Exhibition (FOSE), develop its own conference. According to Condos, the show exceeded revenue goals and, according to feedback from exhibitors, there were higher-quality attendees in 2008.

"I think [with] salespeople--either you can do it or you can't," she says of her bread and butter. In her twenties Condos was a marketing manager for various companies, laid off twice, and had a friend at [event production company] H.A. Bruno, who did PC Expo. I got the job and it went from there." This was in the late '80s. Originally a New Yorker, Condos lived in Atlanta for a while where she became a sales director and eventually moved back to New York to be the show director for PC Expo. She spent two years at AIM and On Demand and eventually joined 1105 Media. "I was thrilled to work for 1105 Media--but especially to work for the government group," she says. "I have continued in this industry and come full circle," she says.
