min Announces Best of the Web Winners
Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Creative treatments of pressing issues and innovative content and business models were the hallmarks of magazine content online over the past year. These qualities were clearly in evidence as Condé Nast Digital, United Business Media’s TechWeb, The Atlantic, Scholastic and Time Inc. properties were among the big winners of min’s 2009 Best of the Web Awards, which were presented today at a breakfast ceremony at New York's Grand Hyatt. Bonnie Fuller, CEO of Bonnie Fuller Media, Ari Brandt, CEO of Linkstorm, and Dan Ambrose, managing director of ambro.com, presented the awards to consumer and b2b brands across 24 categories.

Fuller, in her opening remarks at the Hyatt, said that after 20 years as a print editor, she’s "crossed over to the dark side," as she prepares for her own Web launch. Fuller confessed to her surprise at Twitter's popularity: "It's

amazing to me that strangers are interested in your everyday thoughts." Brandt addressed the economic swoon that has decimated media companies with some optimism, saying, "When this thing blows over, users are going to gravitate to great brands."

Entertainment Weekly won both for best overall video and for blog (“PopWatch”). Condé Nast's Vogue.TV won in the Advertiser Program/Partnership category, while Style.com’s iPhone app won in the Mobile Application category. TechWeb’s Internet Evolution site took b2b honors for Community/Social Networking, Digital Team of the Year and Video - Magazine-Branded Show, while Condé Nast Publications’ Digital Development & Services team was recognized on the consumer side.

Six seminal figures in the development of magazines online were inducted into min’s Digital Hall of Fame as well. Ambrose inducted John A. Byrne of BusinessWeek, Jeff DeBalko of Reed Business Information, David Morgan of Simulmedia, David Morrow of TheStreet.com, Caroline Palmer of Vogue.com and Kevin Poulsen of Wired.com into the hall.

Both Scholastic and Newsweek earned awards for their unique coverage of the presidential election. In addition, a number of honorable mention honors recognized magazine brands for their online coverage of the economic collapse late last year.

At the event, award recipients were asked to relay good—or bad—advice that had been passed along to them earlier in their careers. Andrew Romano, senior writer for Newsweek.com, accepting for Best Consumer Blog (Newsweek's Stumper), said the worst advice he's received is to always write short when writing for the Web. "I wrote really long blog posts and ignored that advice," he said. "When you do a blog, you have to do what you're passionate about. Readers didn't mind going beyond two paragraphs."

Hall of Fame inductee John Byrne said the best advice he's received is "to not plan your career." In reference to the current economy, Jeff DeBalko advised attendees to "focus on all those things you can do better, not on the things you can't control."
