iPad Pre-Orders Start Today The anticipation surrounding Apple’s entry into the portable media reader/player market is coming from all sides. When the company announced the street and pre-order dates last week, Apple stock prices soared to new highs. Publishers and developers have been stumbling over themselves to announce their readiness for the new platform. Conde Nast says it GQ magazine will have an iPad version at the device’s launch date, with others following soon after. In our spot check with other publishers, Hachette Filipacci Media says that several apps will be ready as well, but many magazine brands are not committing to having iPad-specific apps ready for April 3. Some analysts are projecting iPad sales of over 5 million units this year. Many magazine and newspaper publishers are hopeful that e-readers will give them a platform for extending the magazine experience more effectively into interactive formats. In the interview below made at a recent Beet.tv conference, The Economist's executive editor Daniel Franklin argues that media devices could help long-form journalism survive.
