With a 60-Cent Newsstand Price, The October ‘Playboy’ Is Retro And Fun...

Monday, September 19, 2011

Back in 1961/1962/1963, Playboy founder (1953) Hugh Hefner was at the top of his world with a magazine that was nearing its 7 million circulation peak and epitomized the good life for the World War II generation of men like him. It is nice for Hef, Playboy Enterprises president/ceo (since July 2009) Scott Flanders, editor-in-chief (since January 2009)-turned-chief content officer Jimmy Jellinek, and publisher (since November 2009) John Lumpkin to turn back the clock and release the October 2011 issue with the 60-cent cover price of yesteryear.

Gimmick is not new (example: First for Women launched for a quarter in 1989 and was said to have sold 8 million copies), but Playboy is enhanced by a rich tradition and a marketing partner in NBC, which premieres The Playboy Club Monday (September 19) at 10 p.m. (Eastern). “This is one way to use all of our existing channels--print, tv, social media, product extensions,” says Jellinek. “We are getting America psyched for The Playboy Club, and that will be a great complement to Playboy. October ad pages are +70.47%, and newsstand sales should go through the roof when you can buy an international institution for less than it costs for a pack of gum.” Among the advertisers are Seiko and Seagram’s 7 Crown, which partners with the Welcome to the Club advertorial.

Cover is actress Laura Benanti, who plays “Bunny Mother” Carol-Lynne on the program. She sets a semi-precedent by remaining dressed in the photo shoot (“It is best here to have her as she appears on tv,” says Jellinek). Less modest is the pictorial of the original Playboy Club models from the 1960s, who were the original “girls next door” that Hefner found literally by walking around downtown Chicago. Included was June 1963 cover Kelly Collins (below, who provided the “inspiration” for the Benanti shoot.

What cannot go retro is Playboy Enterprises’ long troubled bottom line, but Jellinek says that Hefner taking the company private in January is working well. “We now have 32 international businesses, and our licensing and clubs businesses are booming.”

Coming in March 2012: Playboy’s Badass-themed issue, which will include the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It, like Playboy, is in business partnership with American Media.

...And Is In Sync With the Playboy Club

The much-talked program debuts Monday (September 19) at 10 p.m. (Eastern) as NBC gets into the 1960s’ kick made popular by AMC’s Mad Men. (Ditto ABC, with the September 25 premiere of Pam Am.) Jellinek tells min that the plot lines center around the bunnies worked at the first Playboy Club that opened in Chicago on February 29, 1960 (meaning its 13th birthday comes in 2012) and the characters they met. Includes organized crime, which seemingly is more fiction than fact because the Al Capone/Eliot Ness era of 1920s bootlegging was long gone, but Jellinek says that Sam Gianacana was big-time in Chicago in the 1960s with a girlfriend--Judith Campbell Exner, who purportedly had an affair with President Kennedy.

Jellinek predicts that the “bunny talk” will attract female viewers and the “Mob talk” will attract the guys--even with The Playboy Club competing with ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
