With Michael Jackson covers, Time 'Beat It'

Monday's (June 29) Time release of a tribute to Michael Jackson is the first of an expected avalanche of covers following his June 25 death.  The perfect formula is when a celebrity or newsmaker dies young and unexpectedly, which, as CBS News commentator Jeff Greenfield said on Sunday Morning (June 28), dates back to at least 1926, with the death of 31-year-old Rudolph Valentino and the throngs that grieved worldwide.   "Gold standard," excluding the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, was the August 31, 1997, death of Princess Diana, with People's newsstand sales peaking to nearly 3 million on September 22, 1997.

With the slew of celebrity media (both print and online) that did not exist 12 years ago, it is highly unlikely that the Jackson covers will outsell Diana's.  But, at this stage, they seem to be a lock to produce several 2009 best-sellers.
