Who Is Making Money at Apple’s iPad Newsstand?
Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Now that the app-happy holiday season has ended, it is a good time to take stock at the Apple App Store and see what media brands are selling well. Reportedly, Christmas Day is App Day in tablet world. With the gifting of new devices, more apps are downloaded on this day each year than any other. And unlike last year, the most popular venue of all, the iOS Store, now has a Newsstand where fresh iPad owners can acquire their favorite brands at reasonable rates. So which titles have come out of the holiday season driving the App Store's Top Grossing Apps list? As we see in the list we scraped from iTunes this week, News Corp's much-criticized The Daily project is follow NYTimes for iPad atop the list, with The New Yorker in third. Naturally, dailies, newspapers and weekly magazines have an advantage in the top grossing category if only from their frequency. According to recent reports, The Daily has over 80,000 paid subscribers and 120,000 active readers.

Using the Apple App Store’s Top Grossing list to determine rank order and overall success with the model requires a small litany of caveats and qualification. The exact time span covered by the current lists in the App Store is unclear, at best. Also, magazines especially will rise and fall on these charts according to whether the snapshot we take corresponds to a recent issue drop. Finally, some magazines are not in the Newsstand at all. Time Inc.'s titles, most notably the bestselling People, do not engage in Apple's Newsstand model and live as Apps in the general catalog. Zinio's own newsstand of digital magazines is one of the top grossing apps throughout the App Store, but it is not in Apple's Newsstand. Nor are the very lucrative and high grossing comics distribution apps from Marvel, DC and others.

That said, the App Store Newsstand at least aspires to be a virtualized version of the physical newsstand merchandising environment where subscription-based content can be found easily by users. These are the top grossing titles posted in the Apple iTunes Newsstand the morning of Jan. 10, 2012.
