Virtual Events Get Into the Game, Go Social

Friday, May 7, 2010

Everyone wants to get into gaming…even virtual trade shows. In a new twist on a hot category of 2009, virtual trade show provider InXpo is adding a “Social Suite” to its platform, which will better tie an event attendee both to the common social networks and online games.

The new tools add a social space to any area of the virtual show experience so attendees can log into their Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter account from within the show and post comments and links to their network. For LinkedIn members, the InXpo experience lets them tap into their full base of connections that can be driven into the show content.

On the gaming side, InXpo is actually integrating game designs into the trade show world. Users can play trivia games that include content from the show, for instance, or sponsored content that involves a marketer’s topic or product. The content of the show or sponsor can be turned into a word scramble or trivia contest. The games can be even more elaborate, however. Leaderboards at the virtual show add an element of friendly competition to the event. Cisco CSX used the platform to host a 4-week virtual reality game for the 19,000 sales team members. As a game designed to educate salespeople on the contours of the market, “The Threshold” was declared a huge success when it attracted 13,000 players worldwide.

Fueled by constrained travel budgets and a greater comfort with virtual environmets, the virtual events market is poised for strong growth. Earlier this year, Market Research Media said that the virtual events market had more than doubled between 2008 and 2009 and it estimated a compund annual growth rate of 56% between 2010 and 2015, reaching $18.6 billion worldwide.
