BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Video: Twenty Tweetable Truths About MagazinesThursday, October 15, 2009 At yesterday's kick-off to the two-day Magazine Innovation Summit from the MPA, president Nina Link presented a video of quick takeaways about the enduring value of the magazine industry. In fact, the list was a series of Twitter entries desinged to "showcase magazine vitality" in 140 characters or less. The Magazine.org Web site features both the video and the full text version of the Tweets, plus citations. The continuing rise in paid subscriptions, the slowdown in magazine foldings, increase in launches, all remind the media pundits that the platform is far from dead -- even if advertisers are keeping mum on the subject. Perhaps the most promising stattistics involved youth markets, that the median age of magazine readers remains steady even as it ages for othe rmedia, and that 75% of teens read magazines. The MPA would like advertisers and other media to believe that magazines are not newspapers. Obsolescence will not come with the next generation. We hope. But why click and read when you can do it the new-fangled Internet way - through embedded video? If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com
