Twitter Watch: Rolling Stone, Runner’s World and NYMag Lead GainersTuesday, February 28, 2012 Rolling Stone editors love to tweet about all things pop culture. The company has been doing a good job of Rodale’s Runner’s World has been sprinting up the social media ladder all year. Its 226,678 followers below more than quadruples the 54,000 of a year ago. According to minonline sister publication Audience Development, the brand uses hashtags to follow specific races like city marathons and to create new streams of content around projects like staying in shape during the holidays. As we have been seeing all year, publications are starting to move to the next stage of social media involvement. Rather than seeing their presence on Facebook and Twitter merely as tactics for driving traffic, they are treating these networks as publishing platforms. If people like interacting on the networks, then it isn’t always best to lure them off to a link. Instead, create social media moments that can live principally on the social network platform. Ultimately, you will get followers, and those followers will catch the regular link feeds from the brand, and you will get the traffic. .
