BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS

This Old House Builds on the User-Gen Trend

Friday, May 22, 2009

User-generated magazines are not entirely new, of course. 8020 Media’s JPG magazine has been struggling to make the model work for a totally user-made photo magazine. And almost all print books have taken the lessons of the Internet and interactivity to heart. The users want to be involved. But few UGC projects are as massive and now institutionalized as This Old House’s annual “Reader-Created” issue. Drawing from reader submission to a special online site, the June number features Best Reader Remodels, 33 tips for saving time and money and even a cover chosen by reader voting. Every page of the issue includes reader submissions.

TOH tells minonline that the magazine saw 1300 online submissions this year for the Reader Remodel Contest, up from 450 submissions last year. The Mayor of Bowling Green, Kentucky was this year’s $5,000 grand prize winner. This is the second reader-generated issue of TOH, and the magazines says that all user activity metrics around the project were up substantially this year. Reader tips numbered in the hundreds and TOH plans to continue the series next year. Last year, the Reader-Created issue was named one of the "ideas of the year" by AdAge.

A special site labeled “Your Old House” at the TOH site focuses on user projects. Home Depot sponsors the online component.

Like other magazines, TOH is leveraging the feedback loop the Internet provides to expose the staggering creativity of its readers. One reader submitted a kitchen redo that cost only $645. Others offered novel tips like using the fat end of a chopstick for removing excess grout. Makes sense now that we think about it.
