The Atlantic Brings Civil War Issue to the Web

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Marking the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, one of the few American magazines that was there to witness the original event issued a digital version of its commemorative issue this week. The Atlantic was but four years old when hostilities broke about between North and South. In this volume it collects pieces that were contemporary to the events and retrospective over the years. Louisa May Alcott, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson and James Russell Lowell. With an introduction by President Barack Obama and other reflections from current writers like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Jeffrey Goldberg, the issue is also rounded out by contemporary perspective.

Digital editions of the content are also available now for iPad, Kindle Fire and the Nook devices. The iPad edition will include links to the enhanced Web-only content.

The Atlantic editor James Bennet says that the publication of the hard-copy issue last year had an “overwhelming” response from readers and let the magazine “reconnect with The Atlantic’s founding ideals.” The magazine was intended at its founding in 1857 as a source for abolitionist perspectives on the growing divide over slavery.

The Atlantic has used the digital platform to expand the original print issue content. Pieces from the print issue that had been abridged for size now appear in their entirety. Photo galleries have been expanded to include more selections from both the magazine archives as well as the National Portrait Gallery. And an essay by Yoni Appelbaum on the 360-degree painting the Gettysburg Cyclorama
