Giannetti Out at National Geographic

Steve Giannetti, the very successful and well-liked group publisher at National Geographic, was ousted today (October 1) in a cost-cutting move by National Geographic Society

president, publishing John Griffin. Giannetti, who joined NG from Prevention in August 2000, established many multimedia platforms and turned NG into a brand, while keeping its 121-year reputation for journalistic excellence intact.

NG VP/U.S. publisher Claudia Malley is assuming Giannetti's sales and marketing responsibilities.

Also out are NGS Global Media Integrated Sales and Sponsorships VP/travel Dawn Drew, who took the job in January 2009 after 10 years as NG Traveler publisher, and longtime executive assistant Leslie Armstrong.

In a staff memo, Griffin wrote that "the realities of the current advertising marketplace" had prompted a realignment of resources.
