Squires on iPad: Pretty and Pretty Pricey

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

There is no doubting that the Apple iPad will be a wonderful canvas on which magazines can paint, but don’t forget the larger market that won’t spend $500 and up on another media consumption device, says John Squires, managing director, Next Issue Media. “So all the elements are in place for a terrific color reading experience,” Squires says of the iPad at the new Next Issue blog. Next Issue is the newly formed magazine company joint venture that is exploring ways to bring print brands to a new generation of connected devices like tablets, e-books and phones. Pretty as the iPad is, Squires says, “it’s important to remember that many people are enjoying published content today on the iTouch. Hopefully we will see even lower priced options to further expand the market."

Squires was inaugurating the new Next Issue site and blog, which launched last week.

Next Issue was formed late last year by a consortium of major print media companies: Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp. and Time Inc. Squires will lead the effort. According to the site the group has been busy setting up shop, engaging a PR firm and opening an office at 711 Third Avenue in New York City.

The current Web site will be expanded soon to offer tabs for the company’s many constituencies: publishers, advertisers, retailers and software and hardware companies. Each area of the site will outline the company’s goals in creating new formats for digital delivery of branded media and how Next Issue plans to work with partners. Next Issue is described as the “working company name,” with a more consumer-friendly moniker coming in March or April.

For those who missed the video demos of the GQ iPhone app or the tablet concept issue of Sports Illustrated, Next Issue is hosting both at the site.
