Sports Illustrated Releases Its Kate Upton-Starring 'Swimsuit' IssueTuesday, February 14, 2012 Today (February 14), America gets the "two-fer" of Valentine's Day and Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit "morning in America," with the release of the much-anticipated 2012 issue. Cover choice of issue editor MJ Day is 19-year-old Floridian Kate Upton in a shoot done in Sydney (it is now summer in Australia) by legendary SI photographer Walter Iooss, Jr. Upton has the opportunity to join such past Swimsuit immortals as Kathy Ireland, Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, Heidi Klum, Elle MacPherson, Tyra Banks and Brooklyn Decker. SI's first Swimsuit issue in January 1964 was seen as mid-winter football-to-baseball "filler." It has since grown to a multi-million-dollar business, with videos, iPad/iPhone apps and--new-in-2012--a Las Vegas Beauties and the Beats music festival part of the accessories. Last year's Swimsuit issue, with Irina Shayk on the cover sold 754,423 newsstand copies, far greater than anything in SI's football/baseball/basketball "norm." In Feb. 2014, Swimsuit will celebrate its 50th anniversary, but the fun begins a year from now with a "countdown" directed by Day predecessor Diane Smith.
