Sporting News Relaunches Paid Fantasy Football
Friday, July 30, 2010

We’re still months away from the World Series, but the summer is the time when fantasy football fans start checking their rosters and devising season-crushing strategies. And so one of the mainstays of sports media on the Web gears up for some new play. Sporting News’ Fantasy Source Football relaunches this week with a range of Web 2.0 features to differentiate itself from a crowded pack of very real fantasy competitors.

The new FantasySource.com/football site is entirely customizable. Members will get tools, rankings, updates on players, advice and the stuff that makes these players happy—data, data and more data. The site uses drag and drop widgets to personalize the experience so that feeds of stats, projections, news, boxscores and more can be arranged and edited any way the player likes. The player can manage the feeds so he or she sees only the stats they want. The widget interface allows these boxes to follow the users wherever they navigate on the site.

Fantasy Source is also integrated with other fantasy systems so a user can migrate rosters and deliver alerts across systems.

Fantasy sports is no idle game when it comes to business modelsSporting News charges $39.95 annually for participation. A print subscription to Sporting News is bundled with the membership.

According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, the industry is maturing, however, and is likely not to make as much in revenue in 2010 as it had in 2009. Generally, the market generates about $2 billion in revenue a year. The mean age of fantasy players is 41, and they are voracious sports content readers. Fantasy sports not only produces direct paid income for some providers (there are free alternatives), but the hobby has the ancillary effect of driving tremendous amounts of sports content consumption among the major branded media. Over 41% of players visit two to three sports sites to gather information for their play and more than 28% go to four or five sites regularly.
