Slate Slides Gracefully Onto the iPad
Friday, August 27, 2010

Slate’s entry onto the iPad earlier this month benefits from modest ambitions. Unlike many magazine publishers, the Washington Post-owned news and opinion brand is not trying to reimagine the periodical and reinvent navigation. Nor does it feel compelled to remake itself as a mobilized version of the brand with special functions or service features that are designed for off-desktop use.

No, Slate is just trying to rejigger its multi-faceted content trove into something that is compact and leverages a touch interface. In that, the Slate for iPad app is an elegant solution.

Slate has reorganized its Web site content while maintaining its look and style. The marquee of features dominates the top of the app, but the many sections of Slate are turned into layers of content below that the reader slides across laterally to find the right story. The design not only makes the most of the tablet real estate and involving touch interface, it also effectively condenses loads of content into little rectangles that are richly descriptive enough to offer a quick overview of the day’s content.

Top-line buttons access the newest articles as well as the “Slatest” aggregation of news items, the Slate V video collection and all of the Slate podcasts. Slate has some of the most creative short-form news videos as well as great podcast conversations online. This app brings that content forward better than the site itself and encourages the reader to regard the brand as a true multimedia production.

It should be noted that Slate has a well-presented sponsor in Marriott. The banner ad beneath most screens points the user to a full-page ad with three embedded videos and a link to a reservation page.

All of the usual social sharing tools are here (email, Facebook and Twitter), but we do wish there were more personalization features built in. There are some sections of Slate we rarely read and others we consult regularly, and the app should accommodate that. With highly customizable apps on the iPad such as Flipboard and Pulse, we think that branded media will have to make such personalized features standard.
