BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Sheehy and Girard Go AFARTuesday, March 3, 2009 Former Weider Publishing COO John Sheehy has been named president and publisher at AFAR Media, which will launch an experiential travel magazine, AFAR, later this year. Since leaving Weider, when it merged with American Media in 2003, Sheehy has been running a consulting firm that advised publishers on new magazine launches. His recent clients include Reader’s Digest Association, AARP, Dwell Media and Mansueto Ventures. He also served as publishing director for Time Inc. AFAR Media CEO Greg Sullivan also named Claude Girard executive director of travel for AFAR. Girard was formerly VP, integrated sales, for Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. He has specialized in the travel segment at LTB Media and American Express. AFAR magazine may be one of the only major magazine launches this year; it appears this summer. It will start with a six-issue frequency and an initial rate base of 50,000, increasing to 100,000 with its third issue in 2010. AFAR Media is headquartered in San Francisco and will have a complementary Web site. If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com
