Second-Half 2011 Circ: The Newsstand DeclineFriday, February 10, 2012 Let us be frank: the "lowlight" of last week's Audit Bureau of Circulations' release of the consumer magazines' second-half 2011-versus-2010 Fas-Fax is the acceleration (or deceleration) of the newsstand decline that has nearly been consistent for a generation. The 17-up/73-down single-copy-sales ratio for the 90 charted magazines has frequently been seen before, but 40 of the 73 had declines worse than -10%. The two key reasons—the switch to apps/social media and the no longer cheap cover prices of yesteryear (most celebrity and women's-service magazine were under $1 until the 1980s)—are well known, and the ever higher speed of news delivery can make buying a magazine archaic. People's -12.0% newsstand in the second half can be attributed to the lack of a major celebrity "event" (clearly, the Kardashians don't cut it), but that was nearly matched by the -10.5% first half in spite of the glitz provided by the royal wedding. Similar poor performances came from rivals, with InTouch/Life & Style Weekly/OK! and Star all missing rate base in the second half. min talks more about the decline in the New York Times.
