BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
SI's 'The Olympics in Pictures' gold-medal-winning U.S. four-man bobsled team on the cover. The issue, which is single-sponsored by Panasonic (eight pages out of the 60-page folio), has the magazine's regular 3.15 million rate base with normal subscription and newsstand distribution. Vancouver games are the first Olympics—winter or summer—to get a recap special in SI's 56-year history. But it is unlikely that any SI Olympics issue will surpass the 267 ad-page preview of the Los Angeles summer games in July 1984. That was said to be the magazine's most profitable release for years, until Swimsuit became a multimedia powerhouse. Speaking of Los Angeles, SI photography director Steve Fine—who directed The Olympics in Pictures—will be speaking Thursday (March 11) at the University of Southern California's Annenberg Space for Photography.
