SI Launches ‘Live From London’ Olympics App On iPadMonday, July 23, 2012 NBC may be poised to set new levels of live and streaming coverage for the Summer Olympics in the next few weeks. But other venues are also trying to get in Basically the app has the look and feel of a tablet-enhanced magazine with a small handful of feeds from the Web pulled in. Much of the content of the apps for now is just preview material fo the games. At the table of contents page, however, there is a prompt to go to live coverage. This basically invokes the SI specialty page for the Olympics. The images are nice and large, and the interface conforms to the tablet page. The headline scroll, however, suffers from diminutive text that makes tapping into the links a challenge. Another page labeled “Latest News” is more helpful, in that it gives the user a direct Web link into the news for every sport. These landing pages are more precise and pull together the latest news for each sport as well as relevant column writing from the SI staff. Most helpful is the full schedule of contests in each sport. There is also a handy “Sport Explainer” that offers up a primer on how the sport is played and scores and some history of the major events. SI is promising that the app will pull in live Twitter feeds from writers to the games. Video wrap-ups also will be included. It is hard to tell from the app before the games begin where and how these two latter elements will be pulled into the app. While we will withhold judgment until the games and active coverage begins with the July 27 opening ceremonies, the app feels more like a magazine with a few live elements than a well-tuned and organized “live” experience. It is free and ad-supported, however. If you have breaking news to share please contact min’s editors.
