Rodale Pumps Up Licensing With Exercise Kits

Men’s Health and Women’s Health brands are getting into the fitness equipment business. In a deal to extend the licensing reach of both brands, Rodale has struck a product and marketing agreement with white label equipment maker EB Brands. First out of the gate will be Men’s Health and Women’s Health branded workout kits, soon to be followed by a larger lineup of exercise equipment and health monitoring products. Rodale magazine subscriptions and digital magazine and services offers will add value to the kits.

Rodale says its Men’s Health “Ultimate Total-Body Workout” was designed by the editors of the magazine, and the package includes a one-year subscription to the digital edition of the title and a trial offer to the MH online “Personal Trainer” product. The Women’s Health product offers similar value adds, and each exercise kit retails for $49.99. EB Brands also offers monitoring and related sports equipment under the Bally, Everlast and SportLine brands.

For a magazine company, these partnerships are low-to-no-cost bundles that help advance the brands and cultivate new magazine loyalists. The digital edition of a magazine and a trial membership to a fee-based virtual coach incur no material costs to the publisher, yet it extends the print brand into local drug and sporting goods stores.
