BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Road & Track, Yahoo Co-Pilot '5 to Drive'Tuesday, May 19, 2009 As another piece in their three-year editorial partnership, Road & Track and Yahoo Autos launched a 10-week “5 to Drive” feature series. R&D editors have chosen five cars that best represent their
product categories (convertibles, affordable luxury, family-friendly fun, etc.), and the two brands have provided text and multimedia around the top five in each segment for the two sites. Video featuring “Fox All Access” radio host Chris Leary appears at both RoadandTrack.com and Yahoo Autos iterations of the site.In an interesting contrast between the two sites’ treatment of the same material. Yahoo leads with the video sections while R&D leads with images and articles. The Yahoo page is attracting ubiquitous insurance brand Geico, while R&D’s feature is surrounded by brand advertising from Toyota and Lexus. For obvious reasons, auto advertising has been hard hit by the combination of recession and the meltdown of the U.S. car industry. Nevertheless, auto marketers still need to move metal, as trade salespeople like to say. Auto brand advertising has not gone away so much as it has been aimed lower down in the marketing funnel. Highly targeted auto content seems to be retaining auto advertisers while non-endemic beneficiaries of the past, like lifestyle sites, have suffered most.
