Publisher’s Weekly Adds iPad/iPhone Edition for Book Expo

Publisher’s Weekly is leveraging the mobile app environment to promote its brand during the BookExpo. iPad and iPhone editions of both the current issue of the magazine and the PW-published Show Daily for the Expo are available for free this week. Users can swipe either device to flip through the digitized replica of the print magazine’s May 24 number. The Show Daily is updated every day and also reproduces the print version. URLs in the pages are hot-linked to the iPad and iPhone’s Safari Browser. Also, when tapped book ISBN numbers invoke the Web browser and perform a Google search.

Exact Editions Ltd produced these mobile versions of Publisher’s Weekly.  Exact Editions tells minonline that after this week, the apps will revert to a freemium model. The app will be free to download but access to the full weekly content will require a $4.99 30-day subscription. 

The PW brand was acquired in April by George Slowik, Jr. under the new company PWxyz. PW recently announced its new executive officers. Cevin Bryerman is publisher. Michael Coffey is co-editorial director along with managing editor Jim Milliot.

PW says it will deploy across multiple digital platforms. A redesign of the Web site is planned. A digital magazine version of the book is available through Zinio. PW content will appear on the Sony Reader e-reader device. Slowik said in a statement that the publication is “making up for lost time” and trying to get ahead of the marketplace. “The beauty of independence is the velocity of action. While we have an unusually brisk pace now, considering our exit from Reed, we plan to keep a fast-paced approach.”
