Postage Stamp Honoring Ebony Founder John H. Johnson Is DedicatedThursday, February 9, 2012 Since 1945, a company has bore John H. Johnson's name. Now, a postage stamp does, too, with the Jan. 31 dedication at Johnson Publishing Co. corporate headquarters in Chicago. Johnson (1918-2005) rose from poverty to launch Ebony (1945) and Jet (1951), which made him a leader among African-Americans and in media overall. He was a 1996 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The stamp is part of the Black Heritage series, and the release was timed with February being Black History Month. On hand (clockwise) were current Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, predecessor Richard M. Daley, JPC CEO Desirée Rogers, JPC chairman Linda Johnson Rice (daughter of John H. Johnson), U.S. Postal Service Chicago plant manager Anthony Vaughan and Chicago congressmen Bobby Davis, Bobby Rush and Jesse Jackson, Jr. Johnson joins the handful of media luminaries to posthumously be honored by the U.S.P.S. Most recent, both in 1998, were Time Inc. founder (1923) Henry Luce and Reader's Digest founders (1922) DeWitt and Lila Wallace.
