PopSci’s Digit-Mag Breaks an Old Mold
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

When it comes to digital magazines, alas most publishers seem happy to pour their print content into whatever template their tech provider offers, toss in a few hot links to Web material and call it a day. The result is a field of digimags that underwhelms the user and (according to some publishers) go unopened even by subscribers. And so we were happy to give Bonnier’s Popular Science the nod this year for best Digital Magazine Edition in our min's Editorial & Design Awards. Its series of Genius Guides is among the few examples of publishers and technology providers working together to make something truly exceptional out of this format. Embedded videos and clever interactive page layouts and maps really impressed us. And just this week, the Genius Guide series comes out with another digital magazine issue that we think is even better and definitely worth a look.

The Popular Science Tech Buyer’s Guide opens with an animated cover that invites users into a rich multimedia experience. Each section begins with a full screen animated layout that explodes onto the display and renders editor’s picks to the top gadgets in TVs, home theater, cameras, gaming computers and camcorders. While the issue is quite short, it is notable insofar as it does not feel like a magazine and yet is closer to an interactive DVD than to a standard Web site. Each product gets an oversized image and large highly readable text. Layout areas zoom in and out smoothly for a unique flow. All products can click through to the vendor or Amazon’s e-commerce site for direct purchase.

Popular Science editor-in-chief Mark Jannot says the issue was designed to cut through the tech and gadget clutter and deliver three main choices in each category (PopSci Pick, Bargain, Splurge). “You'll get the knowledge you need to outsmart the salespeople at the store this holiday season,” says Jannot.

The buyer's guide is the third in the Genius Guide series of digital-only issues of PopSci. While the original mode for the series had been to charge fo the digital magazines, this issue is available free to users at the site. It was designed in cooperation with digital magazine provider Zinio.

This is one of the more innovative uses of the digital magazine format, which presses the technology to move beyond its print roots.
