Playboy's Move to Los Angeles Set for April 30

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Playboy Enterprises Inc. CEO (since July 2009) Scott Flanders announced Friday (Jan. 13)  that the magazine will fully close its Chicago headquarters at 680 North Lake Shore Drive by April 27 in advance of the opening in Los Angeles on April 30.

The company has leased office space at the Tishman Speyer-owned Office at Beverly Hills (9336 and 9346 Civic Center Drive).

In an earlier announcement on Dec. 13, there was some possibility that staff members outside of the editorial, art and photography departments could remain in Chicago. But that is no longer the case. How many will relocate and how many new jobs will open in L.A. will be made clear over the next three months.

A PEI statement called the decision to leave Chicago "difficult. The company's roots began in Chicago and will always be connected to the brand's beginning." Chicago was home to Hugh Hefner when he launched Playboy in Dec. 1953 (with the famed Marilyn Monroe cover) and to daughter Christie Hefner during her 1988-2009 reign as CEO.

But Hugh Hefner has been "mansioned" in Holmby Hills, Calif., since the early 1970s, Flanders never left Southern California after his hire from Orange County-based Freedom Communications, and Playboy chief content officer (since Jan. 2009) and Chicago native Jimmy Jellinek made the move in Aug. 2011 in order to be closer to both and to the magazine's tv/video businesses.

Playboy's American Media Inc.-managed advertising and sales staff remains based in New York.
