People.com Gets Game
Friday, July 31, 2009

One of the most visited entertainment properties online, People.com, is getting into the red-hot casual gaming segment in a big way, and in the process hoping to turn its audience into gaming gold. People.com is partnering with free and paid game vendor Big Fish games to feature game downloads at the People.com/games section of its site. This puts Big Fish titles in front of a potential audience of up to 10 million monthly unique and gives People.com the opportunity to get a slice of the exploding online games revenue streams.

Big Fish sells downloadable casual series like Mystery Case Files, Hidden Expedition and Fairway Solitaire. In return for featuring Big Fish games on the People.com site, the celebrity news publisher will get a piece of that revenue and essentially get an e-commerce income stream.

People.com editor Mark Golin says that the site’s target demographic of adult women is the sweet spot for casual games and that the deal demonstrates the brand’s commitment to diversifying the revenue mix.

“People.com continually looks for new and innovative ways to enhance our users’ online experience beyond the celebrity genre,” says Golin. Along with the recent release of the fee-based People Celebrity Tracker for the iPhone and iPod Touch, this program is another example of People.com’s search for new revenue streams. With its massive traffic of 10 million unique visitors the site has the opportunity to leverage that scale against a host of affiliate and revenue-sharing opportunities that can generate real income.

Eyeballs are a terrible thing to waste, and publishers are starting to look beyond simple ad sales as a way to convert activity into cash. Publishers have been trying to insert themselves into the e-commerce revenue stream more forcefully in order to realize more of the non-advertising benefits that come from building a large audience.
