Parenting’s iPhone App Targets Life Stages
Thursday, June 10, 2010

For years the parent and pregnancy magazine titles have leveraged the digital platform, especially e-mail, to parse their audiences into highly targeted segments based on childhood age range or even the week of one’s pregnancy. Now Bonnier’s Parenting brand is taking the same smart tack with its iPhone app. The new Ages + Stages app asks your childrens’s ages and names when you first load it onto the mobile device. The content is then customizable according to the age of your kids. The app, designed by developer Zumobi, gives access to the major content wells from Parenting, including general information, pregnancy, first year, second year, early years and school years. The material most relevant to your parenting experience is delivered first when you open the app. An ever-present search box drills into the brand’s deep content trove to deliver articles that help answer immediate questions.

Users can customize the app by adding their children’s names, ages and photos.

“Our new Ages and Stages app was developed to provide moms with age-targeted tips, research and relevant news that they can access anytime, anywhere,” says Rachel Fishman Feddersen, editor-in-chief, Parenting.com.

The launch of the mobile app caps a year of growth for the brand’s digital business. The site’s audience has more than doubled to over 1 million monthly visitors. Bonnier tells minonline that digital ad sales have also followed suit, doubling between 2008 and 2009 and then again from 2009 to 2010. The site boasts that the typical visit lasts eight minutes and racks up 13 pages of content. Strong performers for this year at the site include the pregnancy planning tools and a growing catalog of birthday cake designs. The site has over 300,000 registered users.

The Ages and Stages App is free and sponsored by Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
