Oprah, Rolling Stone, ESPN Among Big Web Gainers No doubt the worldwide firestorm Rolling Stone ignited with the early release of its July 8 profile of General Stanley McChrystal fueled Wenner Media’s 29% increase in audience, to 5.8 million. As we will report in the Aug. 2 issue of min, Wenner reveals that by its count RollingStone.com alone had 4.7 million uniques in June off of that blockbuster story. More impressive, the average session time was six minutes. Among the comScore top 50 properties reported for June, a few stand out as noteworthy movers this year. Women’s service content network Glam Media has become a traffic powerhouse, now the eighth most popular site on the Web (85.4 million uniques). The poster child for the new model of demand-driven, search hyper-optimized content is Demand Media, and its vast collection of informational content is now ranked as the 17th most popular content provider online (54.6 million uniques). Also coming up the charts with a bullet is the VEVO music video desitnation launched earlier this year by a number of partnered music companies. In short order, VEVO has become the “hulu of music” and in some video charts actually outranks the TV-driven destination in sheer number of videos streamed. In the Aug. 2 min, we feature the May digital boxscores, which drills into the traffic shifts among the leading magazine-branded Web sites. Both Smithsonian’s AirSpaceMag.com and PopularMechanics.com had a massive May when their sharp editorial went super-viral online. Tune in Monday for details.
