BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS

Nook Color Adding Magazines, Android Apps

Monday, March 28, 2011

Barnes & Noble continues to press its case that the Nook Color portable e-reader is a cheaper, smaller and credible alternative to both the iconic iPad and emerging Android tablet devices. The company recently added more  magazine facsimile titles to its Newsstand catalog, including Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, ESPN the Magazine and The Economist. But to expand the appeal of the Nook Color even further, the company will upgrade the device’s firmware substantially next month to add access to Android apps.

Barnes & Noble announced last week that the update would add app and email support. But according to numerous reports and a preview on The Home Shopping Network, the next version of Nook Color’s OS will use the Android 2.2 operating system and enable Adobe Flash playback.

Exactly how much access the Nook color will have to the full range of Android apps is unclear. Because the B&N device does run on a custom version of Android, it has become the perfect target of hackers who put the full Android OS on the Nook color to use it as a regular tablet. While B&N might not want to open its e-reader platform entirely to the Android ecosystem (which could erode the bookseller’s direct sales of goods on the device), adding familiar tablet features could be a powerful lure to consumers who are daunted by the high price of the iPad, Xoom and competing tablets in the market. The new Nook Color update is scheduled for a mid-April release.
