National Review Tries a WebathonMonday, June 15, 2009 In tough times, publisher get creative. Conservative magazine site National Review Online is invoking the PBS and NPR model—direct fund-raising. The “2009 Webathon” asks readers of the site to make donations via credit card or PayPal. As part of its plea for funds, NRO editor Kathryn Jean Lopen tells readers, “National Review Online may be free to our readers, but it is very expensive to produce. (And no, we have not been immune to the toxic effects of this prolonged economic recession.) To help defray our substantial operating costs, we ask that you be as generous as possible during our summer 2009 fund drive.” NRO is not the only magazine brand to try the fund-raising model. NEED magazine recently solicited its readers in an effort to eliminate advertising altogether from its pages. And music magazine Paste has an active call for donations that leverages Twitter. NRO has a number of other revenue streams coming off of its site. A downloadable digital version of the print magazine is available for $21.95 annually, $8 less than the print subscription. An online store also offers NRO-branded accessories and article archives. If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com
