BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Nat Geo: Your Cover, Your Way revenue via user-customized content? Today National Geographic rolls out a project that is user-controlled inside and out. A special collector’s edition titles National Geographic Your Shot includes over 100 of the best user photographs submitted to the magazine’s Web site in the past three years. People not only can order the issue online but they can customize it with a cover photo of their choice. The custom cover option costs $19.99, only $9 more than the newsstand version fot he magazine that goes on sale on June 30. National Geographic has been soliciting user photos since March 2006. More than 155,000 images have been uploaded to the site. Every day an editor curates the best dozen for the Web gallery. The images that garner the most user votes each month make it into the monthly magazine. This special one-shot issue will be 144 pages and include advertising from HP, Fuji and Energizer. User-generated magazines have become a bit of a trend this year. 8020 Media has been struggling with its model, where JPG magazine and others used reader photos to fill the pages entirely. The June issue of This Old House was “reader-created” with user-submitted tips and projects. National Geographic fans can create their custom magazine starting June 15 at ngm.com/yourshot If you have breaking news to share please contact Steve Smith at ssmith@accessintel.com COMMENTS
1.
Another biz model by NGS. Again appealing to the customer/user/reader, instead of their old way of publishing.
