BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Nat Geo Relaunches Site With Open-Source Spirit NationalGeographic.com relaunched this week. The site is focusing on the core elements that bring users to the brand online: photography, animals, environment, adventure, travel, video and daily news, the company says. Recognizing that people gravitate to Nat Geo’s unmatched photography, the site has emphasized its images both in the general layout and in an even larger collection of big-picture galleries. Among the most attractive new features in the redo are the “fly-outs” that pop up when you mouse over one of the main section tabs on the top menu. It presents an illustrated view of the current featured content in each of the sections, effectively letting you browse the top-line content from the entire site with a single mouse swipe. The new Photo of the Day gallery is an oversized series of images that can be viewed or downloaded as high-res wallpapers. Rob Covey, SVP, content and design for National Geographic, walks users through some of the main new features. National Geographic rebuilt the site internally using an open-source framework called “Django.” This approach lets the developers plug new modules easily into the site, like upcoming community and social media features. It also allows other developers to work with the company to advance new features. NationalGeographic.com claims to attract more than 13 million unique users to its Web sites each month.
