'Miller-McCune' Magazine is Renamed 'Pacific Standard'Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Miller-McCune, the four-year-old "thought" magazine modeled in some ways after The Atlantic and Harper's (magazine), has the new name of Pacific Standard. Geography is the chief reason, says editor-in-chief (since May 2011) Maria Streshinsky. The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based bimonthly has a "distinctly Western perch....Our geographical positioning is as crucial a foundation for our editorial mission as our devotion to research-driven journalism."![]() Although the journalism will not be limited to the Western U.S. and Asia's Pacific Rim (Australia/Vietnam/China/Japan/North and South Korea, etc.), "we will be doing so from a Pacific perspective and a Western sensibility." Miller-McCune was named after Sara Miller and her late husband George McCune (1924-1990). They were successful college textbook, journal and reference publishers through their 1965-founded Sage Publications, which led Miller to start the Miller-McCune Foundation for Research, Media, and Public Policy--the linchpin for the magazine and Web site. "Sara was right there with us in wanting to make the change," says Streshinsky, who moved west from The Atlantic managing editor. "She, too, was concerned about what Miller-McCune meant to the readers and to the marketplace." The Miller-McCune Foundation name is unchanged. The Pacific Standard magazine title takes effect with the April 2012 issue. Its circa 100,000 circulation is both paid and controlled.
