Media Tablet Sales to Reach 46 Million by 2014

Monday, May 24, 2010

Strong early sales of the Apple iPad and expected launches of rival models in coming months have bolstered expectations for the tablet devices market. IDC says that 7.6 million units will be sold this year, but the market will grow to 46 million a year in 2014. The compound annual growth rate for the category will be 57.4%.

IDC analysts say that the availability of compelling applications specifically designed for the devices will help drive the category from being “nice-to-have” currently to becoming a consumer necessity eventually. IDC distinguishes the “media tablet” as a new category of device and unlike its “Tablet PC" predecessor. They define the category as having a tablet form factor with displays from 7 to 12 inches. IDC expects that the initial use for media tablets will be in the consumer segment but that more productivity applications will emerge and help drive its use in business.

While Apple helped define the segment with its iPad, the next wave of similar devices will no doubt come from devices based on the Google Android operating system. The Dell Streak and Dell Looking Glass (shown above) are two models expected to hit the market soon. HP, which recently purchased Palm is rumored to be developing a device using the Palm mobile OS. Other manufacturers are developing Linux-based rivals as well.

When it comes to actual downloads and sales of branded media apps, figures are only beginning to eke out from publishers. According to a roundup this week in MediaWeek, USAToday is claiming that by May 16 its newspaper app had been downloaded 371,213 times. The New York Times claims 300,000 downloads, while Wall Street Journal says its app, which includes content for subscribers only, has been downloaded 230,000 times with 100,000 regular users. Bonnier’s $4.99 PopSci+ app has had 22,000 downloads.

At last week’s min Webinar “E-Readers and Tablets: Position Your Magazine Brands for Profit” executives from Bonnier, Condé Nast, MediaIdeas and VIVmag shared their early learnings about the business models, creative challenges and market forecasts for the tablet. The event is available on-demand.
