LicenseStream and PaymentLounge Launch Global Licensing Clearinghouse
Wednesday, February 3, 2010

In an attempt to help publishers exploit the massive fragmentation of content around the globe, content licensing technology company LicenseStream is partnering with digital payment system PaymentLounge to create an international clearinghouse for text, images, video and audio media. The new system integrates a merchant service (global billing, accounting and payment) with automated content licensing. McEvoy Group, publisher of Spin magazine and Chronicle Books, and the Chicago Tribune are charter clients in the launch. The system is designed to allow content licensing and tracking with secure real-time billing in one place. The publishers and licensees will be able to conduct business across 60 countries and various currencies. The model could help publishers access new worldwide markets as many countries start accelerating their use of the Internet and show a taste for new content.

The LicenseStream system offers a storefront where buyers can discover and buy content quickly. Creating a kind of content network, the publisher can have this content generate traffic for someone else at their site or drive traffic to the originator’s site. LicenseStream tracks the re-use of licensed content and handles the collection and distribution of royalties.

LicenseStream is a product of ImageSpan and PaymentLounge is from arvato finance, a billing products provider.

Spin magazine recently launched an online licensing storefront via LicenseStream to monetize its decades of archived photo content. Parent company McEvoy Group says it will launch a similar store for Chronicle Books this year. Jack Jenson, president of McEvoy Group, said in a statement, “By enabling us to make this content available online in a secure, cost-effective way, LicenseStream and PaymentLounge together allow us to offer a new service to our photographers, one that provides more exposure for their work as well as a new revenue stream for them and for each of our publishing properties.”
