Layoffs at SPIN

Numerous layoffs across editorial categories appear to have occurred at SPIN magazine, according to a report from Billboard.
The entertainment business news source reports that the editor-in-chief Steve Kadell and Spin.com news editor Devon Maloney were among the casualties. As well, layoffs hit the photo and production departments, according to this report.
Kandell alluded to the layoffs without reporting them explicitly at his Twitter feed @SteveKadell. He added in a weekend Tweet, " "Thanks so much to everyone for the kind words. But a lot of people got winged yesterday, so hug a photo editor today."
This round of cut backs is the first move by the brand after it was purchased by BuzzMedia earlier this month. The fate of the print magazine has been in question, and these layoffs suggest that the bi-monthly mag is either positioned for a major re-think or a shut down.
Late last year SPIN announced plans to move to a larger format and bi-monthly publication. BuzzMedia CEO Tyler Goldman said in a statement earlier this month that the company was evaluating the fate of SPIN magazine. He said at the time that the company believed print had a place in the business of reporting music. “In the longer term, we’re still defining how print fits in from a platform perspective,” he said.
While the print monthly is struggling, the brand has been a hot on tablets, with its SPIN Play app proving popular over time with users.
In response to queries from minonline, SPIN responded with the following statement:
As part of BUZZMEDIA’s acquisition of SPIN, we have been evaluating our integration plan in conjunction with our efforts to enhance and grow SPIN's offerings and audience. As part of these integration efforts, we have made some formal changes to the SPIN staff, which impact the Editor in Chief/Magazine, Steve Kandell; Managing Editor, Catherine Davis; and nine others.
We are retaining a powerful SPIN team of 25. Specifically, Charles Aaron, who leads editorial efforts across all of SPIN, will continue in his role as Editorial Director. In the coming year, we will build upon this core staff by doubling the editorial team. This investment will enable us to continue enhancing SPIN's offerings, which includes making the SPIN archive, an incredibly important part of music history, much more accessible.
BUZZMEDIA and SPIN are committed to moving forward with print, but we are still determining exactly how print fits in with SPIN’s multiple distribution points and growth initiatives. While we are early in this process, we have concluded that SPIN’s print offering will change after the September/October issue and we will not publish a November/December issue. SPIN will continue to be led by a strong staff with deep experience in both digital and print. We look forward to sharing what the print offering will be going forward.
